Friendship Lodge
In November 2007, the city approved the Native Friendship Centre moving forward with their transitional housing project “Friendship Lodge” situated on the corner of 17th and Queensway (former Backpacker Motel). Construction of the new LEEDS certified building began in Summer 2008. As of June 2009 the Friendship Lodge is now operational and has opened its doors to residents.
In response to the neighbourhood’s concerns around this project, the Native Friendship Centre established a planning committee and invited neighbourhood residents and other interested parties to engage in the development process.
Monthly planning meetings are being held and a number of neighbourhood residents have attended. Discussions have focused on addressing issues that
may impact the safety and wellness of the neighbourhood. Block Watch
was a suggestion that was brought forward and is now being implemented.
